“ Lyrics materialise in my head from a thought about what is going on in the world, or they come out of emotional relationships, with always a strong desire for love and connection. At times I make the conscious decision, as with the latest song I’m writing, to deliberately create an uplifting, joyful song and often rely on Adie to add the uplifting beat. I tend to sit at the piano and find chords sometimes guitar. I love and let words appear that I can mould. Whilst I want the songs to be cool funk often I lean into what is more likely my true essence, a soulful folk sound. Really all I can do is let what is inside come out with some thought to how I present the words and produce something I can happily live with.
Songs like Love Train are about a specific personal experience ie: coming home to Aotearoa and being able to live here, in and on this wonderful land, whilst wanting to be a part of the beauty of Nature. I am very grateful to be here. I wanted to sing about diving into the sea like a bird and wanting to name a native NZ bird I started researching, so for bird lovers if you are here, I came to a Fairy Tern Tara iti a bird i’d never heard of before. Writing this song, and others, part of my songwriting process, allows me to learn new words and meanings.
There is no end to creating songs, following dreams, personal philosophies, memories and questions. Now I’ve found my present favourite creative outlet all I want is a listener who will love them, relate to the words, love the musicianship and find meaning out of them for themselves or just love them. ”
